You don't hear enough about some of our great English warriors here in the states!<br /><br />Just a tip, the use of "would" in the past tense is often used wrong and awkwardly by many writers:<br />"He would serve as commander in chief of the North America and West Indies from 1848-1851..." should read "He served as commander in chief of the North America..." or "He later served..."<br /><br />"Would" can be used to talk about actions that took place in the past, but it is used in the same context as "used to" to imply an action done regularly or repeatedly in the past.
