Sometimes there probably is simply no one left to pass an heirloom on to. Perhaps they need the money, or maybe no one in the family appreciates their history. My aunt and uncle found dozens of family photo albums being discarded after an old man died once. Some of the images were from the mid-19th century and others from the World Wars. It seems when he died he had no relatives or none that cared about the contents of the albums. Luckily they saved them from ending up in a landfill because they appreciated the look into times past.
