Oddities of the 2015 February Regional Auction

The appeal of firearms is different things to different people.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, and one doesn't have to sell over 20,000 guns a year to realize it.  It goes without saying that many collectors appreciate the history behind certain firearms, like the Peacemaker or the '73 Winchester.  Others seek collectible firearms by virtue of a keen fascination with a certain conflict, say the Civil War, Great War, or World War II.  There are also those who desire mint condition guns to know what they were like when they originally left the factory, folks that appreciate the fine precision and machining of a well-made sporting arm, aficionados that want to trace every single variation of a firearm be it Lugers or M1 Garands, and even people who just like the raw power of a Class III weapon barking some lead down range.

Well, today's items enjoy an appeal all their own and it's none of those mentioned: they're just unusual.  Be it by way of their appearance, design, or just an item we don't receive very often, all the following items are what I'd like to call Atypical Items.

Calico Carbines

The Calico has always been a pretty odd bird.  Using a helical magazine located on top of the frame and coming in a variety of shapes and sizes, the firearms from Calico Light Weapons Inc. have always had a very distinct, futuristic appearance.  It's this very appearance that has placed them in many movies such as Spaceballs, Total Recall, RoboCop 2 & 3, Bad Boys, Star Trek: First Contact, and even the Bond flick Tomorrow Never Dies.

Besides its appearance, there is an unspoken "fun factor" when dealing with a Calico firearm.  That big helical mag on top will either hold 50 or 100 rounds of .22LR or 9mm making it one darn good plinker.  Granted the weight of 50 or 100 rounds in a full mag will drastically change the handling of the weapon and making it far less practical, but we're not focused on that right now. OK, Mr. Wet Blanket?  RIAC has two chances to get your hands on a Calico in this auction.  One is in lot 5604, which holds a Calico M100 carbine (.22 LR) and one M900 carbine.(9mm).  To add to the curiosity factor of the M100, it has been nickel plated, ensuring whomever wins it will have a suitable and stylish firearm in any sci-fi movie cameos they make.

Apparently, the M100 with it's scary folding stock, large magazine, and black finish was too scary for some folks, so Calico came up with the M105S.  The new variant implemented a wooden stock with thumbhole, making it much less black and removing its folding SPAS-12 looking stock.  The M105S can be found with three other guns in lot 5600. One of these things is not like the others.

If you've never gotten the heebie-jeebies when thinking of the horrors of war, this surgical kit should help.  Still not convinced?  Kits with tools like these were commonplace during the American Civil War, where historical accounts likening field surgeons to butchers are not uncommon (and are also not without a dramatic flair accumulated over time).  Even the great poet Walt Whitman documented the scenes he saw.  When looking for his wounded brother George, Walt's travels took him to Fredericksburg, where he witnessed the barbarity of "modern medicine."  He writes,

"FALMOUNT, VA., opposite Fredericksburgh, December 21, 1862. — Begin my visits among the camp hospitals in the army of the Potomac. Spend a good part of the day in a large brick mansion on the banks of the Rappahannock, used as a hospital since the battle — seems to have receiv’d only the worst cases. Out doors, at the foot of a tree, within ten yards of the front of the house, I notice a heap of amputated feet, legs, arms, hands, &c., a full load for a one-horse cart. Several dead bodies lie near, each cover’d with its brown woolen blanket. In the door-yard, towards the river, are fresh graves, mostly of officers, their names on pieces of barrel-staves or broken boards, stuck in the dirt. (Most of these bodies were subsequently taken up and transported north to their friends.) The large mansion is quite crowded upstairs and down, everything impromptu, no system, all bad enough, but I have no doubt the best that can be done; all the wounds pretty bad, some frightful, the men in their old clothes, unclean and bloody. Some of the wounded are rebel soldiers and officers, prisoners. One, a Mississippian, a captain, hit badly in leg, I talk’d with some time; he ask’d me for papers, which I gave him. (I saw him three months afterward in Washington, with his leg amputated, doing well.) I went through the rooms, downstairs and up. Some of the men were dying. I had nothing to give at that visit, but wrote a few letters to folks home, mothers, &c. Also talk’d to three or four, who seem’d most susceptible to it, and needing it."

Quite a harrowing description and one that affected Whitman profoundly.  Besides writing about the horrors of war, Whitman would also go on to pen many patriotic poems, including the well known "O Captain!  My Captain!" as well as spend countless hours in war hospitals visiting with soldiers, comforting them, or helping them write letters.

While primitive compared to today's technology driven field of medicine, kits such as these were often the most effective tool against the wounds from another piece of high technology of the time: the Minié Ball.


Volcanic Cartridge

Speaking of the Minié Ball and developments in ammunition, you may be surprised to see a round of ammunition included with the Volcanic Lever Action Navy Pistol in lot 5002.  It is a Volcanic round, patented by Smith & Wesson and is a direct development from the Minié Ball.  The Minié Ball is essentially just a bullet with a hollowed out tail.  The very rear of the bullet, where the lead was the most thin,would expand due to the pressure created by the expanding gases when the weapon was fired.  This expansion is the source of the round's advantages.  Once the lead had expanded, it created a tighter seal forcing more gas to push the bullet instead of escaping around it.  This more efficient use of the gas from the ignited gunpowder increased muzzle speed significantly, creating a faster and more deadly cartridge.  This tighter fit of the bullet in the barrel also allowed the bullet to grab the rifling more effectively, in turn providing more accurate shot placement.  The third benefit was that the tight fit also helped remove fouling from previous shots.

The next iteration would be the "Rocket Ball."  The Rocket Ball would be patented in 1848 by Walter Hunt, a00 seldom-remembered but great inventor responsible for things like the safety pin and the fountain pen,  Hunt is also critical to the Winchester story, not because he invented the Rocket Ball, but because he also invented the Hunt magazine (tube magazine) and the very earliest version of a lever used to operate his gun.  All that aside, his "Rocket Ball" or "Volitional Ball" for his Volitional Repeater, was created by essentially filling the cavity of the Minié Ball with propellant and sealing it at the rear with a cork disk which had a tiny hole at its center so that a source of ignition could reach the propellant.  It was a weak cartridge with a short range due to its limited amount of powder.

The next logical step was for someone to make the cartridge truly self-contained by adding a primer.  So that's exactly what Horace Smith & Daniel B. Wesson set out to do.  By adding a primer and making improvements on Hunt's lever action, the partnership of Smith & Wesson would eventually become the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, thanks to several new investors, one of which was a familiar New York shirt maker named Oliver Winchester.

So besides the round having a really fascinating history, the gun itself is part of Winchester and Smith & Wesson lore and quite rare.  Only 1,200 of these pistols are estimated to have been made between 1855-1857.  To sweeten the pot even further, it has matching serial numbers on its lever, the underside of its grips, and on the grip strap under the left grip.



Helmets, et al.

Most nations have military dress uniforms with no purpose what-so-ever.  With their aim on symbolism and statement instead of practicality, they can be flamboyant, highly ornamented, and occasionally silly to those not familiar with the meanings behind them.  If you need proof of this, please feel free to Google "Evzones" or "Swiss Guard," but don't take a drink of anything before you do.  It turns out that helmets are no exception.  In our February Regional Auction is an impressive assemblage of helmets, czapkas, pickelhaubes, and shakos.  All of which I'm sure are laden with symbolism, military significance, and national pride.  However, to look at them through 21st Century glasses and with no national context, some of these helmets can appear downright flashy.  Here are a few examples.

Lot 5171: Prussian Grenadier Guard Officer's Pickelhaube

Ah yes, the pickhaube.  It's what makes finding the Imperial Germans so easy in all those World War I films, right?  That big ol' spike on the top, plus the large brass plate were designed to appear very aggressive, though the brass plate may have providing another thin layer of protection as well.  After the Germans beat the French in 1871, these were the big ticket item for many European armies  The early versions were much taller and ridiculously impractical.  The short version you see before is much more akin to later styles that would have existed right up until the introduction of the German Stahlhelm in 1916.  A stahlhelm, with its now classic "coal scuttle" design, remained roughly the same shape throughout World War II, though other changes were made.  Pickelhaubes were not durable enough for the trenches and provided no real protection being composed primarily of leather, lacquer, and the brass adornments.  Combined with their high cost to manufacture, both government and soldier alike were likely glad to move on to superior designs.

While czapka in Polish simply means "cap," the word now is generally understood to mean the type of Polish helmet shown above.  Its four-sided top resembling a mortar-board hat from graduation day, these were for full dress.  Also like graduation day, different colors and plumes in different locations symbolized different units.  Lancers were exactly what they sound like - troops with lances.  Just like knights, Romans, and Greeks, these troops on horseback with spears or lances could be an effective military force, and they were up until the technological developments of the Great War.  Today very few military units, even ceremonial ones, wear the helmet that once symbolized Polish independence.

Difficult to see in this photo, notice the depiction of a skull in the lower front portion of either helmet plate.  Just because they were fancy doesn't mean they weren't trying to be scary.

Lot 5188: 17th or Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers Officer's Czapka with Plume

Remember how we said they sometimes featured plumes?  This czapka is nearly identical to the one above it, with the obvious exception of the prominent feathers off of the left brow.  The skull on the helmet plate is much easier to see in this photo.

A final example of the many, many helmets this auction contains, is this Dragoons Officer's helmet.  Historically dragoons have been cavalry troops bearing a number of different weapons depending on both the commander and nation they served, though that definition began to change as horses became less effective on the battlefield.  Most dragoon units today are comprised of a wide variety of armored fighting vehicles.

This particular 1871 pattern helmet is accompanied by its storage tin, which thankfully bears a nice surprise for any amateur historian.  An outfitters tag on the tin lists the helmet as belonging to one "Capt. H.E.F. de Trafford."  This helmet might not be able to talk, but with tiny bits of information like this, one may be able to find out where it went, what it saw, and more about the man that wore it.


Homemade "Gatling" Gun


Lot 5425: Six Norinco SKS Semi-Automatic Rifles with Gatling Type Fixture

This is making the rounds on the internet right now and it just wouldn't be fair to leave so many questions unanswered.  What you see is 6 Norinco SKS semi-automatic rifles mounted in a homemade "Gatling gun" type stand.  It works using very simple principles.  The crank is located on the right hand side of the device and when the crank is turned the assembly that has the barrels mounted to it rotates.  You know what, I'm just going to let Joerge from the Slingshot Channel explain it to you. He makes devices like this all the time and can show you show this functions.  Joerge has done this with cap guns, marbles, and several other projectiles.  This isn't exactly how it works, but it's pretty close.  Long story short, as the unit spins, different "fins" attached to each trigger, brush past a fixed "tooth," thus moving the fin, activating the trigger, and firing the gun.

Looks like someone was having some fun with a surplus of SKS rifles they had lying around.  Is it just me, or is this thing just dying to be taken to a range?

Early Winchester Rifles in Our Regional Auction

Our December Premiere Auction has just finished and while we'd love to bask in its results for a little while there are way too many fantastic items in our 2014 February Regional Sale to allow that!  If you've been watching or participating in our auctions, you know that we traditionally have had 3 Premiere Firearms Auctions and 2 Regional Firearms Auctions every year.  Recently, we've also added our Online Only Auctions.  The Premiere Auctions are our crème de la crème.  It is comprised of the rarest, most valuable, artistic, historic, and high condition firearms.  The items in these auctions are sought after by experienced collectors and savvy investors around the globe.  Regional Auctions are more designed for the beginning collector.  Unquestionably, there are some excellent collectables in our Regional sales, but the selection largely remains usable weapons, beginner collector arms, and the fantastic selection of bladed weapons, military artifacts, and firearms accessories that people have come to expect from Rock Island Auction Company.

When looking through the items to appear in this February's Regional Firearms Auction, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of higher end guns appearing in the sale.  It's a testimony to the ever rising number of quality firearms that are entrusted to RIAC and we couldn't be more thrilled!  The high end firearms spanned several different genres, but in today's article we'll focus on the early lever actions, namely Winchester and Henry rifles.  It was especially pleasing to find so many nice lever actions because we know that they, along with Colts, are what a lot of gun aficionados love to see and collect more than any other genre.  Take a look at some of these great collector firearms!


Lot 2: Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine
Manufactured in 1869 and subsequently rechambered to 44 CF.  The contrast between that dark wood and the patina covered brass is striking.  For the price, this is a realistic and easy way to get a good looking, early model Winchester.  In fact, it's the first rifle under the Winchester name.

Lot 1: New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle
This particular rifle was manufactured in 1865 and has a pair of sling loop/swivel on the left hand side.  The brass buttplate on this rifle is of an earlier pattern with its rounded heel.  The honey colors in both the receiver and the wood were clearly made for each other.  It would make a handsome addition to any collection.

Lot 6: Engraved Winchester Second Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine
Engraved guns are an instant attractant to collectors and this gun should prove no exception.  The supremely dark wood with a receiver that seems to define the color "gun metal gray" gives a rather ominously dark countenance to the rifle.  Some nice scroll work engraving adorns the receiver as well as some punch dot sections, and a scene involving a buck.  This particular rifle was manufactured in 1875.

Lot 3000: New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle
Manufactured in 1863.  Every collector in their right mind would give up quite a bit to own a Henry rifle with a high percentage of original finish.  However, there is something to be said about rifles like this that maintain earthier colors throughout.  The colors of the steel, brass, and oil finished walnut, are so complementary you could design a room in your house around them.

Lot 4: New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle
Manufactured in 1864. Even Henry rifles with some replacement parts still command premiums.  The example below has had its cleaning rod trapdoor replaced as well as its stock, but collectors and investors still can't wait to get their hands on that original brass receiver, octagon barrel, and integral 15-shot magazine.  This is a piece of American history and a few replacement parts don't even come close to diminishing the significance of this firearm.

Lot 5; Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Special Order 26 Inch Barrel
Manufactured in 1892 with a special order 26" barrel, this 1873 Winchester is an American classic and looks the part.  For this price, especially for a special order, it can be your American classic.  As more and more Winchesters get socked away in private collections, the special order guns become rarer and rarer, let alone those with multiple or unusual special order features.  Trying to take this gun home is an easy decision to make.

Lot 1000: New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle with Samuel Hoggson Attributed Factory Engraved Brass Frame
You may have seen the condition of this gun and been surprised when you spotted the estimate underneath the last photo.  However, it should come as little surprise since original Henry rifles are supremely collectable in and of themselves.  Plus, true factory engraved Henry rifles are among the most rarest and highly sought after firearms thanks to their broad appeal, limited production, and place in American history.  This particular rifle features the special order engraving with scroll work, flowers, punch dots, and a scene of a resting lion.  Combine a classic American arm with a rare feature attributed to a notable Master Engraver (Samuel Hoggson) and you've got yourself a rifle with strong demand from collectors everywhere.

The Evolution of "That Damned Yankee Rifle..."

Some stories just get better every time you hear them and chances are, if you've been collecting for any length of time, you've heard the legend behind the Henry rifle. That's right, that unassuming looking rifle of a modestly sized production that was the grandfather of the Winchesters that changed the shape of our nation and likely the world. But how does such a humble little rifle so amply carry such loads of praise and heaps of historical significance? Very little was known about Henry rifles, and their namesake since the New Haven Arms Co. left very few records after control of the business shifted to one Mr. Oliver Winchester. But I get ahead of myself...

The first person that is partially responsible for the Henry rifle and the subsequent success of Winchester Repeating Arms is the un-notably named Walter Hunt. This native New Yorker was a mechanic and an inventor who started his business in 1826 in the city of his birth. Walter Hunt is now recognized by revered institutions such as the Smithsonian Museum as one of the most productive inventors of his time, but he had an unfortunate habit for not patenting his inventions. His list of inventions is best described by R. Bruce McDowell.

"Among his many inventions were the safety pin (to which he sold the rights for only $400), the fountain pen, the foot-operated gong for stages and trolley cars, an advanced nail-making machine, the paper collar for the well-dressed 19th Century gentleman, a self-closing inkwell, a new type of heating stove, an ice boat, a flax-spinning machine and a lock-stich sewing needle which led to the invention of the sewing machine credited to Elias Howe."

It is only fitting that a man so content to watch his inventions be credited to others be the first mentioned in this abridged history. His contribution to the Henry rifle lies in his invention of the Hunt Magazine, the "rocket ball," and a lever mechanism rifle suitable for firing his new ammunition. Through his cooperation with one Mr. Lewis Jennings, an inventor and model maker, Hunt came to make working models of his repeating rifle, which he called the "Volition Repeater," and eventually to simplify it in the design of another rifle to be discussed later, the Jennings repeater. It is popularly, yet incorrectly, accepted that Hunt's rifle failed for several reasons (cost of manufacture, primitive manufacturing equipment, too complicated), and that after its failure Jennings improved on the design and patented it. Those reasons for Hunt's failure have no merit and it is much more plausible that the Volition Repeater was never produced because Jennings was already developing and redesigning a simpler rifle. Also, since Jennings and Hunt were under the mutual employ of one Mr. George A. Arrowsmith, they were likely working on it together. This is especially credible considering the patent dates of both inventors on their respective inventions. It should also be noted at this stage that Mr. Arrowsmith could not fund both inventors so for $10,000 (perhaps already knowing he had a failure on his hands) he transferred the patent rights to a Courtlandt C. Palmer, former railroad president and leading hardware merchant in New York City. Without getting ahead of ourselves, Palmer would eventually finance the production of 5,000 Jennings rifles through the Robbins & Lawrence Company. None of those names sound very important until one is told that the shop foreman of the Robbins & Lawrence Co. was one Mr. Benjamin Tyler Henry.

To his credit, Walter Hunt provided the "Hunt Magazine," the tubular magazine to run parallel and underneath the barrel.  This basic design would be present in all subsequent revisions leading up to the Henry rifle and remains in prolific use today.  Half of this tube would hold a compressed spring when reloading and would hold, as Hunt would phrase it in his patent text, "twelve balls, which I consider sufficient for convenience or utility."

Besides his notable presence in the life of Walter Hunt, Lewis Jennings made several independent improvements to the Hunt rifle. In fact, the only Hunt design characteristics he kept were the sliding internal bolt, the tubular magazine which would still run underneath the barrel, and the "percussion pill" magazine. The Jennings rifle was contracted by Courtlandt Palmer to be produced by the Robbins & Lawrence Company of Windsor, Vermont, then the largest non-government arms manufacturer in the United States. It was also the employer of a shop foreman named Benjamin Tyler Henry, who was in charge of making improvements to the mechanism. Other notable gunsmiths present at Robbins & Lawrence include:
  • Horace Smith had been stationed at the Robbins & Laurence plant by Courtlandt Palmer himself to supervise the manufacturing of the Jennings rifles.
  • Daniel Wesson, who was employed by Leonard Pistol Works but was inspecting parts and finished pistols of the Leonard percussion pepperbox pistols that were contracted to Robbins & Lawrence.
Unfortunately, despite this "who's who" of American gun makers present, the Jennings rifle was a failure. While the rifle would fire a "naked ball" (that without patch or lubricant) twenty times in a minute, Mr. Lawrence himself stated that, "The result in firing the gun was that the ball leaded the barrel, by building on, to such an extent that in firing twenty shots from a 50-100 calibre bore there would be a hole in the barrel less than 25-100." Apart from this it was called "too complicated" by the Ordnance Department and was still underpowered due to the limited powder in the "rocket ball." It is thought that the only Jennings Repeaters produced were for testing and a patent model. The order of 5,000 from Robbins & Lawrence, never filled to its entirety, was to be converted entirely to Jennings single shot breech loaders, much like the Sharps rifle that would eventually win the endorsement of the Ordnance Department. There were less than 1,000 Jennings rifles produced in all its varieties and every last one was weaker and more expensive that other muzzle loaders in common use at the time.

Courtlandt Palmer, not being a man to quit (or to misuse an investment), assigned Horace Smith to "fix" the Jennings rifle. Smith kept the magazine tube, sliding bolt, bolt locking lever, and priming pill magazine of the prior two designs, but with some important modifications. Most notably the action was completely redesigned by removing the rack and pinion action from the Jennings models and replacing it with an action that pivoted at the front, which would look much more familiar to shooters today. Smith was working in the same building as B. Tyler Henry and undoubtedly aware of his design improvements. However, this variant was also not without its shortcomings (e.g. the percussion pills igniting in the magazine and causing a chain reaction), and it went through three notable variants each one improving slightly the bugs of the last. There was even an experimental Smith-Jennings repeating pistol! Despite its improvements, it was still a rifle that was still dependent on the weak rocket ball cartridge, an external primer & magazine, and it was not yet self-cocking.

"The Volcanic"
How Horace Smith initially met Daniel Wesson to form The Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, of New Haven Connecticut is a bit of a mystery. However, there is no mystery that the men conversed while working at the Robbins & Lawrence factory and discussed the failures of the Jennings rifle and the Smith-Jennings repeaters. Another persistent unknown is how the eventual partners came up with the toggle joint, a feature so improved that it appears in almost every lever action thereafter. It is commonly accepted that Smith was sent to London by Courtlandt Palmer in 1851 to attend The Great Exhibition in order to show their 1841 "Mississippi Rifle," but also to perform some reconnaissance on the recent innovations by European gunsmiths. While in London, Smith spoke with Louis Nicholas Auguste Flobert about his "copper case, self-contained rim fire ammunition," and method of extraction. While Smith & Wesson fully admitted they did not invent the rim fire, metallic cartridge, the claim of the toggle joint is another matter. No one knows how Smith came to utilize the toggle joint. He could have invented it himself, employee B. Tyler Henry could have invented it, or maybe he saw the little piece of engineering at work in London. In any case, it was a watershed improvement that saw prolific use in future firearms.

Smith & Wesson are also to be credited with innovations in ammunition, though lack of a reliable cartridge would eventually lead to their downfall. They recognized that neither the Flobert cartridge from France, the rocket ball, nor their own primed rocket ball had enough power to be used successfully in rifles. So they made their own new self-contained cartridge and an improved pistol to fire it, and asked Mr. Courtlandt Palmer for around $10,000 for tooling of the new inventions. He agreed and re-assigned the Hunt, Jennings, and Smith patents to the new partnership known as Smith & Wesson. Under the new partnership the men produced many pistols chambered not for the Flobert cartridge or their own improved cartridge, but instead for their primed rocket ball, eventually nicknamed the Volcanic cartridge. It was never named that officially, but the term was popularly used to describe both firearm and ammunition after being compared to the fiery eruption of a volcano in a magazine's review of the gun. B. Tyler Henry was employed likely as a shop superintendant. Smith & Wesson lasted only a year before design flaws and finances were exhausted. Returns of the pistols abounded and performance was spotty at best. Palmer, the seemingly eternal source of funds, had lost a lot of cash investing in the development of firearms and now wanted to recoup his funds. He did so with Smith & Wesson by incorporating the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. 17 months after the forming of the failed company "Smith & Wesson." There were 29 stock holders in all, one of which was a local shirt manufacturer inspired by the success of Samuel Colt. This  men's shirt maker purchased 80 shares and went by the name of Oliver F. Winchester. Within eight months the three men, Wesson, Smith, and Palmer, had fully abandoned the company and pursued other avenues in the industry even as Volcanic arms and ammunition continued to be produced and improved. It was a company of little capital, several patents on failed firearms and ammunitions, and a board of investors that knew nothing about manufacturing firearms. Smith & Wesson's insistence on using primed rocket ball cartridges, despite knowledge of other, superior rounds led to an early failure for the partners. They were not to make a practical lever action repeating pistol. It would be another two years before Smith & Wesson formed their second business venture involving the manufacture of "revolving magazine, metallic cartridge pistols."



Desirable Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol
This is a solid example of one of approximately 1,500 lever action Navy pistols with an eight inch barrel manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., circa 1856. This pistol was manufactured before Oliver Winchester acquired the majority of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. stock and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co., in 1857. The pistol had a blue octagon barrel with an integral magazine. The frame, side plates and grip straps are brass. The hammer has a casehardened finish and the finger hole loading lever, bolt and cartridge elevator were niter blue. The barrel is fitted with a nickel silver post front sight with a fixed iron notch rear sight dovetailed to the top rear of the frame. The top of the barrel is marked with the three-line legend "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB 14. 1854." (partially visible). The matching serial number is stamped on the right side of the loading lever, the left side of the frame under the grip and on the inside of each grip panel. Fitted with varnished two piece smooth walnut grips.


Oliver Winchester
This name is certainly known to anyone even vaguely familiar with firearms. After becoming a minority stakeholder (1.33%) at Volcanic Arms, he also joined its Board of Directors as a Vice President in June 1855. He knew nothing of the gun business, but enjoyed such success manufacturing shirts that his capital available for outside investments was significant. Within two years the company was declared insolvent and through the death of Volcanic Arms' president in addition to Winchester paying off of Volcanic’s debtors, the courts awarded all assets of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. to Oliver Winchester. This included the assignments of all patents of Hunt, Jennings, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson that had previously belonged to Volcanic. Other stockholders received nothing. Oliver Winchester had not given up hope on magazine-fed repeating firearms. On the contrary, prior to the insolvency, he had been promoting a new firearms company called the New Haven Arms Co. After acquiring some capital from the very people that had just lost every cent they had invested in Volcanic, Winchester sold all the assets from Volcanic to New Haven with the exception of the patents. He only sold to New Haven the right to produce the firearms and ammunitions named in those patents, while keeping the actual patents for himself. Winchester had just made out like a bandit. New Haven Arms Company would now be manufacturing the Volcanic Repeating Arms and paying him to do it. Besides noting the high value of the patent on the improved cartridge firearm, Winchester also took note of the experience of a man well acquainted with the design of repeating firearms and the ever evolving design of ammunition: Benjamin Tyler Henry.


Rare Factory Engraved Volcanic Lever Action No.1 Pocket Pistol

Benjamin Tyler Henry
If you've been following closely, you've heard this name mentioned in several places. He was a shop foreman during the manufacture of the Jennings rifles. He was employed as a shop superintendent by Smith & Wesson's first failed partnership. He now was being given full control to develop a new cartridge for the New Haven Arms Co. Prior guns' actions had been sound, but their cartridges were the Achilles' heel. Standing atop of all the cartridges Henry had seen developed, he dove right in and began experimenting with the .22 caliber rimfire cartridge of Wesson, making it larger and more appropriate for rifle use. Even though Volcanic's insolvency took place in Februdary 1857, by the end of 1858 Henry had developed a .44 caliber cartridge capable of a 1,200 fps muzzle velocity; a noted improvement over the 500 fps Smith & Wesson cartridges. All that needed to be done now was design a gun to fire it. Much easier said than done. It would require the frame to be larger, the barrel adapted for the new cartridge, the addition of firing pins independent from the bolt face, and the development of an ejection system. The task before Henry was monumental, but he was the right man for the job. In early 1860 Henry had completed all the changes and had a patent issued by October! He had made all the adaptations in just over a year, sounded the death knell for rocket balls and other Volcanic arms, and forever associated his name with American firearms.




New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle
Manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate, and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel/magazine had a blue finish, the hammer and loading lever casehardened and the replacement straight grain walnut stock is oil finished. Nickel silver blade front sight and fixed iron rear sight. The left side of the barrel has the standard screw-fastened sling loop and the left side of the stock has a factory fitted sling swivel. The brass buttplate is the late pattern with pointed heel. The top of the barrel is marked "HENRY'S PAT. OCT.16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO.NEWHAVEN.CT" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "5413" is stamped on the top barrel flat at the breech. The matching serial number is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver rail.
